Mulai dari Elizabeth dan Bandits ke trilogi The Lord of the Rings dan The Aviator, Cate Blanchett membuktikan diri sebagai aktris drama yang mumpuni. Kemampuannya memainkan beragam peran telah membuat Cate menjadi favorit penonton. Tidak berapa lama lagi, kita bakal menyaksikan aksinya di Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Kali ini ia akan menjadi lawan main bintang gaek Harrison Ford.
Sejak memulai karirnya di dunia layar lebar sejak tahun 1994 (Police Rescue) di tanah kelahirannya, Australia, Cate telah lima kali masuk nominasi Oscar dan memenangkannya melalui film The Aviator (2005) sebagai aktris pendukung terbaik.
Karir Catesebenarnya dimulai dari dunia teater. Peran panggung utamanya dimulai ketika ia menjadi lawan main Geoffrey Rush di David Mamet (1993). Baru sekali tampil ia langsung menuai penghargaan Sydney Theatre Critic’s Best Newcomer Award. Dari panggung ia menapak ke layar kaca melalui mini seri Heartland.
Debut film internasionalnya sendiri baru dimulai tahun 1997, ketika ia menjadi aktris pembantu, berperan sebagai perawat yang ditawan tentara Jepang dalam Perang Dunia II berjudul Paradise Road. Di film ini, ia beradu akting dengna Glenn Close dan France McDormand. Sementara peran utama pertamanya diraih lewat Oscar and Lucinda (1997), dengan lawan main Ralph Fiennes.
Hanya butuh setahun, Cate langsung masuk nominasi Oscar untuk pemeran wanita terbaik melalui film Elizabeth I of England (1998). Walaupun dikalahkan oleh Gywneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love), ia sempat memenangkan penghargaan BAFTA Award dan Golden Globe Award untuk peran yang sama.
Pemeran Galadriel dalam trilogi The Lord of the Rings memang memiliki talenta besar dalam seni peran. Hampir tiap tahun, ada saja film yang dibintanginya masuk nominasi bahkan memenangkan penghargaan, termasuk di antaranya adalah Elizabeth (1998), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Bandits (2001), Heaven (2002), Veronica Guerin (2003), The Aviator (2004), Little Fish (2005), Notes on a Scandal (2006) dan Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007).
Pada tahun 2007, Cate dinobatkan majalah Time sebagai salah satu dari 100 Orang Paling Berpengaruh di Dunia dan oleh majalah Forbes disebut-sebut sebagai salah satu aktris paling sukses.
Sukses di dunia peran tidak membuat Cate silau. Perempuan beranak tiga ini tetap ingat akan kodratnya sebagai ibu rumah tangga. Tidak salah bila aktor Hugh Jackman sampai merasa perlu memujinya setinggi langit. "Cate Blanchett adalah wanita super dan luar biasa pada setiap level. Dia bukan saja aktris bertalenta tinggi, tetapi seorang ibu yang berdedikasi," ujar Jackman pemeran Wolverine di film X-Men.
Faktor keluarga pulalah yang mendorong ia dan keluarga kembali ke tanah kelahirannya pada 2006. Untuk yang satu ini, Cate, yang menikah dengan Andrew Upton, penulis skenario, memberi alasan: “Andrew dan saya menyadari betap berartinya Australia bagi kami. Kami melihat komunitas teater di Sydney dan kami merasa menyatu dengannya. Kami mencoba tinggal di beberapa tempat yang lain, tetapi terasa ada ketidakcocokan. Menjadi jelas bagi kami, ketika anak-anak lahir, bahwa keluarga dan komunitas teater merupakan hal yang utama bagi kami.”
Pertemuan Cate dan Andrew sendiri dimulai tahun 1996 ketika ia bermain teater The Seagull. Ini bukan cinta pada pandangan pertama. “Dia pikir saya aneh dan saya pikir dia arogan,” ujar Cate mengenang masa lalu. “Itu menunjukkan bagaimana anda bisa salah menilai sesuatu. Tetapi ketika ia mencium saya, di situlah semua bermula.” Mereka pun akhirnya menikah pada 29 Desember 1997. Anak pertama, Dashiell John lahir 3 Desember 2001, yang kedua, Roman Roberts, lahir 23 April 2004. Dan yang terakhir Ignatius Martin lahir 13 April 2008. Ketiga anak mereka adalah lelaki. (dans)
